December 4, 2025 - Employment and Benefits

The main focus of this session was on Social Security benefits and employment for people with disabilities, including detailed explanations of SSI and SSDI programs, work incentives, and ABLE accounts.
November 20, 2025 - Doctors + Nurses Knowing How to Talk to People With Disabilities

SARTAC explored challenges faced by individuals with disabilities when accessing healthcare, sharing personal experiences and discussing strategies for effective medical appointments. The conversation ended with a discussion on improving medical training and communication for healthcare professionals.
November 13, 2025 - Red Cross and Disaster Preparedness

The main focus of this SARTAC meeting was emergency preparedness for people with disabilities. Presenters shared practical tips about how to plan ahead, stay safe, and handle stress during emergencies.
Participants then met in small groups to talk about their concerns, ask questions, and share ideas about upcoming events. When everyone came back together, each group shared why emergency preparedness matters to them and their communities.
November 6, 2025 - How to Get Young People Involved in Self-Advocacy

The meeting focused on a self-advocacy project that teaches high school students with disabilities to speak up for their rights. We talked about ways to engage youth in advocacy and how to work through challenges, including concerns about parent involvement. We discussed strategies for leading youth-led conversations, creating welcoming and inclusive spaces, and building self-advocacy skills through interactive activities and leadership opportunities.
October 30, 2025 - What is Autism?

The meeting focused on autism, including what it is, how it is diagnosed, and common myths and misunderstandings. Presenters shared both facts and personal experiences about living with autism.
The group also talked about how society views disability, how autism has been understood over time, and why it is important to respect, understand, and support people with autism.
October 23, 2025 - Know Your Rights! Speak Up!
In this fun and powerful video created by Green Mountain Self-Advocates, self-advocates share stories that bring 12 HCBS rights to life. Each scene shows what it looks like when someone isn’t getting their right — and how, with the help of a Super Self-Advocate Superhero, they speak up and make things right. This video was written by self-advocates to help people understand their rights, speak up for themselves, and live the lives they choose.
October 16, 2025 - How the Printed Word Becomes a Small Business

Presenter: Connie Cyndi Chu, SARTAC Fellow
Guest speaker Connie Cyndi Chu shared how she created a writing class for people with disabilities and turned it into a published anthology. She talked about the steps involved in writing, editing, and self-publishing a book. The session ended with a question-and-answer time, where she offered practical tips and encouragement to aspiring writers.

Presenter: Ashley Mathy, SARTAC Fellow
Ashley wrote a book about how she dealt with bullying and moving forward.
She made videos about being an author and her project.
September 25, 2025 - Starting and Owning Your Own Business
This session shares many examples of people with intellectual disabilities owning their own businesses.
September 18, 2025 - Falling Through the Cracks

This session provided opportunities for small group discussion about what it means to fall through the cracks. People shared success stories of speaking up and getting what they needed.
September 11, 2025 - Update on Marriage Penalty
If two people who are on SSI get married, then they get 25% less in benefits than what they did as single people.
August 28, 2025 - Importance of DD Councils, P&As, UCEDDs

August 21, 2025 - Bullying

The group explored various forms of bullying and harassment, shared personal stories, and discussed the importance of awareness, reporting mechanisms, and advocacy for preventing bullying and violence.

Guest Speaker: Tyrome Launderville serves on the National Steering Committee for the Link Center, which works to improve the lives of people with I/DD and mental health needs. Tyrome’s message to others is simple: “Never give up!”
GMSA presented basic information on emotional regulation. Tyrome shared his personal experiences and coping mechanisms for managing emotions and crises.
