December 1, 2022 - Fellowship Opportunities

A SARTAC Fellowship is like an internship. It is for 1 year. You find an organization to work with. You pick a project to do that will improve your leadership skills. You work on your project for about 6 hours each week. SARTAC pays you $5,000 to complete your project.

October 6, 2022 - Setting Boundaries

You are in charge of what you do. You decide what is okay and not okay for you. This is called personal boundaries. It is different for each person. For example, some people don’t like hugging and some people are big huggers. It is up to you. You get to decide what works for you. This is called setting your boundaries.

August 18, 2022 - Supported Decision Making

Courtney Hineman, a self-advocate from Ohio described how she uses Supported Decision Making in her life. Courtney is a Community Outreach Advocate working for the Butler County Board of Developmental Disabilities. She works with Josh Young from The Ohio Network for Innovation. They present to families and people with disabilities about Supported Decision Making.

July 28, 2022 - The HCBS Settings Rule and You

The rules agencies need to follow are called the HCBS Settings Rules. The deadline for states to comply with these federal rules is March 2023. Hear ways to teach self-advocates about the rules.

July 21, 2022 - New Vaccine Resource Made by Self-Advocates

This video was created by the Virgin Islands Developmental Disabilities Council (VIDDC). This video is narrated by Edita Carty, the Chair of the VIDDC and Claire Petersen, the video producer. The video provides the importance of taking the COVID-19 vaccinations, the history of vaccinations and how vaccinations save and continue to save lives.

April 21, 2022 - What is Mental Health?

Max Barrows and Hasan Ko met with more than 40 self-advocates from at least 17 states to talk about mental health. We discussed - What helps? What does not work? For sure, something that works for 1 person may not work for others. We thank self-advocates for talking about this tough topic.

April 14, 2022 - How Self-Advocates Help Their Peers Make Supported Decision-Making Agreements

Chester Finn

Chester Finn worked with Massachusetts Advocates Standing Strong (MASS) when they made a supported decision-making form. They believed other tools were too hard to understand. Chester wrote a report on what he learned. In it, he made suggestions for self-advocates who want to help their peers make supported decision-making agreements. Chester calls these suggestions his 10 Commandments.

The Autistic Self Advocacy Network is creating a new resource about dealing with an active shooter event. During this SARTAC Zoom session, peer leaders shared their questions and concerns.

On March 31, 2022, 50+ self-advocates from at least 25 states discussed Covid-19 issues. 
This session identified the ongoing impacts of Covid-19 expressed by people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

March 24, 2022 - Self-Advocacy & Self-Determination

The Arkansas Alliance for Disability Advocacy educates and empowers disability advocates, builds awareness about the issues people with disabilities face every day, and fosters collaboration between advocacy programs to give self-advocates, peer advocates, parent advocates, and legislative leaders the tools they need to be active participants in the disability rights movement. Arkansas Alliance for Disability Advocacy shared their updated training on Self-Advocacy & Self-Determination.

We learn from each other. Get advice from someone who has already experienced what you want to do or what you want to try to do. Find out how this program works in Connecticut. It is a real job for self-advocates. The person hires a peer support with their DDS funding.

This is not played exactly like the real Jeopardy Game
instead we just ask ‘multiple choice’ or ‘true or false questions.
We are sharing this game with you to use with your self-advocacy groups!

February 3, 2022 - Taking Charge in Hard Times: Self-Determination During Covid

This session created space for some peer support on speaking up during Covid. The session was co-facilitated by Liz Weintraub from AUCD and Max Barrows from SARTAC. Many people with IDD reported that they have lots of people in their lives telling you what to do because of Covid -19. One impact of Covid-19 for people with IDD is that their families and providers are taking control of our lives. “They are taking advantage of the myth that we can't decide for ourselves or that we will make the wrong decision. For self-determination to be real, people with disabilities must have the dignity of risk and be able to make mistakes free of losing our independence and self-determination.”

January 27, 2022 - Right 2 Ride by The Self-Advocacy Association of New York State

Right 2 Ride is a video based, peer-to-peer training about: Taking Public Transit, Transportation Advocacy, and the Americans with Disabilities Act as it relates to transportation.
